I’m an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto. I’m part of the DGP group, and the Third Space group more specifically.
My research is about interrogating major sources of epistemic authority on the web. My research analyzes online knowledge repositories like Wikipedia, Mainstream Media coverage, and popular transcribed audio archives, investigating whose voices (both figurative and literal) are widely accessible, even prioritized, and whose are silenced. I also analyze how these archival silences lead to predictive biases in academic and commercial machine-learning technologies. My work paves the way for targeted interventions that privilege marginalized voices. I apply both big-data computational methods from the computational sciences and small-data inference methods from traditional statistics, often both.
I earned my PhD at the Natural Language Processing Group at the University of British Columbia, where I was advised by Jian Zhu and Vered Shwartz. My research there was also supported by (NSERC) and UBC’s Public Scholars Initiative. During my PhD, I was a visiting researcher at the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering where I had the good fortune of working with Yulia Tsvetkov, Chan Park, and Sachin Kumar. I was also a research intern at Ai2 Aristo, NVIDIA, and Amazon’s Lab126 in each summer term of my PhD program.
